Brace options for adults
If you need braces as an adult, there are several options to choose from. The types of braces available to you depends on your situation.
Category 1: the fixed brace
This brace is also commonly called the ‘metal brace’ although they can also be made from ceramic. You can recognise this brace by the brackets that are placed on each tooth. Wires are stretched between the brackets, and other elements are also used.
Category 2: invisible/hidden braces
As an adult, you may like to have less visible braces. In that case, there are two options for braces you can choose as an adult.
First, there is the Invisalign, which is a removable, transparent brace. The brace is almost invisible when you are wearing it. Because the brace is removable, you won’t experience any discomfort with eating, and you can brush your teeth as usual.
Second, there is the lingual brace. It looks the same as a fixed brace, but it is fixed to the inside of the teeth. As a result, the brace is not visible from the outside. This brace works very precisely because the clasps are made to measure. The lingual brace is suitable for everyone and can be used for all situations.
The process
Having braces as an adult can be nerve-wracking. You may not know quite what to expect. The process of getting braces is different for everyone. The orthodontist will draw up a treatment plan specifically for you. In the plan, we discuss the type of brace necessary, the length of treatment time and the results you can expect.
The length of treatment
The time a treatment takes depends on your individual situation. If your teeth need a lot of changes, it may take several years to complete the treatment. If only minor corrections are required, then treatment time is often shorter.
Results
The treatment results also depend on your individual situation. Beforehand, you discuss the various options and desired outcome with the orthodontist. The result also depends on the type of braces you choose.
As an adult, there are so many options to choose from when it comes to braces. The orthodontist will discuss which braces are best for you and explain how long the treatment will take and what you can expect from the results. It’s different for everyone and tailored entirely to your needs.
